Dealing With Anxiety Sweat

Have you ever noticed that certain sweat smells worse than others? Gross, but true. Try not to think about this fact next time you feel anxious: anxiety sweat smells worse than workout sweat. I know you wish we never told you that, but this is one of those the “more you know” kind of moments.

Turns out that sweat is produced in the body in two different ways. Unfortunately, the sweat process that especially reeks is the one connected to anxiety. Which is really too bad. When working out, you are expected to smell bad. In fact, one of the best parts about wearing workout clothes was that it basically gave you license to smell however you wanted. Well, we’ll keep it a secret as long as you do too. Let’s keep wearing our workout clothes as an ingenious disguise that masks our natural scents.

The worst part about smelly anxiety sweat is that it usually occurs in the absolute worst moments. Job interviews, dates, public speaking events, these are the moments where anxiety sweat makes itself known. However, we can’t, in good conscience, just leave you without any tips to help deal with anxiety sweat. They’re simply too many things in life that cause anxiety for us to not be equipped with nervous-sweat strategies. Here are a few ideas to help you keep nervous/anxiety sweat in check.

  1. Take Deep Breaths.
    Thinking about what’s causing you stress will only perpetuate nervous sweat. You need to break away from the mess and take a deep breath. Hold for a few seconds and release. Repeat. Deep breathing slows your heart rate, which, in turn, reduces sweating.
  2. Stay Hydrated
    Your body not getting enough water triggers sweat to help cool you down. This is not what we want! If you’re hydrated, your body won’t feel the need to sweat as much. Also, if you suffer from cottonmouth in stressful situations, water can really help there too.
  3. Avoid Certain Foods and Drinks There are few foods and beverages out there that inherently induce sweat. When facing a stressful situation, avoid hot and spicy foods, smoking, or drinking alcohol.
  4. Wear Breathable Clothing
    It’s no secret that certain clothes make you sweat a ton, and other clothes make you not sweat a ton. At the risk of sounding overly obvious, we strongly recommend you wear the non-sweaty clothes. Opt for natural fabrics like cotton or bamboo, and whatever you do, avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester.
