The Rich History and Benefits of Amber Scents

The amber scent is steeped in mystery, and often misunderstood. Primarily from ancient conifers, amber has fascinated humans for centuries. You may be familiar with amber as the golden-hued fossilized tree resin you collected as a kid. If you were lucky, a prehistoric insect was preserved inside!

Aromatically, amber actually represents a family of scents. Its signature warm scent is soothing and promotes a sense of calm. Learn more about why amber is special and why it is one of our favorite new aromas.

Amber Fossilized Tree Resin

What is amber?

The term amber can refer to fossilized tree resin, the essential oil derived from that resin, or a family of scents. Fossilized resin is sap secreted by trees that has polymerized over millennia.

How is amber oil made?

Amber oil is obtained through a process called dry distillation, where the resin is heated until oil is secreted. With this method, aromatic compounds can be carefully extracted from the fossilized material, ensuring the essence of the ancient forests is preserved.

A family of scents

When we talk about the amber scent, we’re actually referring to a family of scents, which encompasses a range of resinous aromas. The amber family includes scents like fossilized amber, labdanum, benzoin, patchouli, and vanilla.

What does the amber scent smell like?

The Fossilized amber essential oil is intensely smoky and resinous. It is not generally found on its own in perfumery. Instead, it is blended with other scents to create a balanced and pleasing aromatic experience.

Blending essential oils

Humble Brands' unique amber blend

Amber for our products is extracted from ancient, fossilized Himalayan tree resin. The 35-million-year-old amber produces an oil that is deeply resinous.

Our in-house natural perfumer meticulously crafted a scent blend that embodies an authentic, sweet amber identity.

  • The scent leads with bright, floral, and creamy sweet notes from jasmine and vanilla, respectively.
  • It is labdanum-forward, offering a rich and balsamic core, supported by the dry and mineral-rich warmth from fossilized amber.
  • Nagarmotha adds a smoky, woody nuance, enriching the overall complexity.
  • Patchouli and cedarwood anchor the scent with their woody, earthy aromas.

The result is a harmonious blend that is sweet yet earthy, warm yet slightly smoky.
