What is a facial mask?

A face or facial mask is the topical application of ingredients left on for a period of time to improve the condition of the skin.

The benefits of facial masks for the skin

For generations, people have obsessed over painting their faces with various concoctions in hopes of coaxing their skin into a glowy state. One of the most basic facial mask ingredients, mud, still adored today, was said to be favored by Cleopatra.

Typically left on for 10-15 minutes, facial masks give skin more contact time with skin-loving ingredients. The theory is that facial masks lock in the good stuff, giving the skin an extra dose of what it needs1.

Many people believe facial masks can hydrate, moisturize, dry, or exfoliate the skin based on the ingredients selected2. Although, without a doubt the greatest benefit is simply taking time for yourself.

Can I make my own facial mask?

You sure can! Getting a professional facial can be tricky to fit into our busy lives, not to mention expensive. Making your own facial mask is easy and affordable, especially when it requires only simple ingredients from your kitchen.

One of the major benefits of a homemade facial mask is knowing all the ingredients going on your face.

As with anything you put on your skin, it’s important to use caution. We recommend testing any new recipe or product on a small patch of skin before using.

The benefits of honey for skin

People around the world use honey for its moisturizing properties and to support anti-aging. It is a natural exfoliator as well, which means it helps slough off dry skin to give you that enviable glow.

Honey has been a popular salve for ages. It is known to have antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties3. With all that soothing, nourishing goodness, it’s no wonder honey can be found in a variety of commercial beauty care products today, including lip balms, hair products, and cleansers.

Choosing the right honey for your face

If you know us, you know the quality of an ingredient is paramount. When selecting honey for this recipe, you’ll get the most benefits by choosing a jar that is raw, organic, and unpasteurized. Unpasteurized honey retains more of the good enzymes and compounds that you want to take advantage of.

Cautions

If you have an allergy to honey, pollen, or bees, honey may not be the skincare ingredient for you.

If you’re using the face mask before getting dressed or going to bed, ensure the mask is completely removed from skin to avoid a sticky mess.

You may want to avoid this recipe if you're experiencing any kind of skin issue. It’s always best to talk to your doctor if you have questions.

The benefits of jojoba oil

Have you ever wondered what exactly a jojoba is? Well, it’s a shrub that thrives in the dry climates of the Southwest, but grows around the world. The oil is made from the plant’s seeds. Jojoba is a popular oil for skin care because it is non-comedogenic and is soothing to the skin.

Jojoba oil is packed with skin-loving properties that help keep skin soft and supple. It is touted for its moisturizing abilities, and is very similar to our skin’s natural sebum, making it a great pick for a super nourishing face mask4.
