Your Guide to Healthier Lips

We've covered your pits, now let us cover your lips!

We wanted to make the perfect, moisturizing lip balm for all of your adventures and still use our favorite simple ingredients.

You’ve heard our case for aluminum free deodorant: what goes on your body, goes in your body. This is even more true with lip products. The skin on your lips is thin, and as such, your blood stream can absorb these ingredients much more easily. More so than many other beauty products, you consume lip balm throughout the day as you eat and drink.

Let’s keep it clean, people!

You may want to take a peek at what's in that lip balm at the bottom of your purse. Here are a few of the ingredients that you should avoid putting on your lips:

  • Petrolatum (or petroleum jelly, mineral oil)
    • Petrolatum is made from refined petroleum (aka oil!). Some refining methods use toxic compounds, so if the petroleum jelly becomes contaminated during the manufacturing process, various carcinogenic agents can get into the jelly. One of which is Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, which have been linked to breast cancer.
  • Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
    • Typically used as a preservative in lip balms, butylated compounds are connected to cancer, organ-system toxicity, and endocrine disruption.

  • Parabens (Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Isobutylparaben, any ingredients ending in -paraben)
    • Parabens are also potential endocrine disruptors due to their ability to mimic estrogen. This effect is connected to an increased risk of breast cancer and may also lead to the development of malignant melanoma- a deadly form of skin cancer.

We are always learning. Education is the first step of informed decision making when it comes to what you put in and on your body. What products have you decided to swap? Let us know!
